TLU SA is in the final stages of preparations for the annual Congress, taking place this year on 6 September at the Voortrekker Monument.<\/p>\n
“For us, as the oldest agricultural organisation in South Africa, it is a great privilege to host our congress this year at this special site,” says Bennie van Zyl, general manager of TLU SA. “The historical connection is something we cherish.”<\/p>\n
TLU SA and the Voortrekker Monument jointly planted a tree in the Trekroete Garden at the Bloukrans Monument on 16 February 2022, commemorating those who were killed on the night of 16 and 17 February 1838 at Bloukrans and Weenen, as well as the victims of farm murders and rural violence in their current context. TLU SA invites visitors to visit this site.<\/p>\n
“For us, the tree symbolises life and also radiates vitality and resilience with the daily utilisation of life-giving moisture from deeply anchored roots,” says Van Zyl. “In the same way, our farmers are deeply rooted, despite farm murders that irreversibly change the lives of families, farms, and communities, and they draw strength from their steadfast belief in fulfilling their cultural mission.”<\/p>\n
This year’s congress theme is “The Four Seasons of Agriculture.” It refers not only to the challenges of the physically changing seasons but also the spiritual, modern, and political challenges that affect agriculture. The fluctuations that come with seasonal changes in agriculture, which are part of day-to-day management, have educated our farmers to see the outcome on the other side of the destructive setbacks that life presents and focus on that.<\/p>\n
TLU SA remains future-focused, knowing that we are stewards of the land and, therefore, farm for our descendants. Hence, the future is explored, given the lessons we have learned from the past and the present.<\/p>\n
“When we stand by the tree in the Trekroete Garden, one is repeatedly moved by the sacrifices made by the people who were here before us,” he says. “People who not only excelled in the realm of agriculture but also created and built in all other areas are the result of a nation that accepts the responsibility of what life demands of each of us. Given the realities of today, our farmers must indeed receive recognition for their role. Commercial farmers are, in fact, the greatest asset our country has, and we must treasure them.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
