The TLU SA Central Region held its annual conference on 10 April 2025 just outside Pretoria. The event brought together producers and other stakeholders in the agricultural industry for a day of relevant discussions on issues directly affecting the farming community.<\/p>\n
The conference was opened by Rev. Paul van den Berg of the Reformed Church in Cullinan, who welcomed participants with an inspiring prayer and message. Thereafter, Henri Combrink, regional chairperson of TLU SA Central Region, shared the programme and set the tone for the day\u2019s discussions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a very insightful conference,\u201d said Henri Combrink, regional chairperson. \u201cThe collaboration and participation of those who attended made it a great success.\u201d<\/p>\n
The day provided valuable insights into agricultural challenges, thanks to a range of experts. Dr Johan Malherbe from the Agricultural Research Council presented a detailed overview of the impact of drought cycles and weather models, engaging with participants in a deep discussion on how farmers can adjust their planning to better prepare for the challenges posed by climate conditions.<\/p>\n
Paul Avenant from the Department of Agriculture took participants on a journey through the challenges of invasive plants and bush encroachment. He offered practical solutions for managing invasive species and explained how ecological succession should form an integral part of farm management to ensure sustainable practices.<\/p>\n
Hanlie Kroese from Santam then focused on the importance of wildfire insurance in a time when risks to farmers are increasing. She shared not only the practical aspects of insurance but also strategies that farmers can implement to protect their businesses from wildfires.<\/p>\n
After each presentation, participants were encouraged to ask questions, resulting in valuable and engaging discussions and feedback.<\/p>\n
