Eskom should<\/span> be<\/span> congratulated<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> fact<\/span> that<\/span> during<\/span> the<\/span> last<\/span> six<\/span> months,<\/span> until September<\/span> this<\/span> year,<\/span> it could report a R12.6 billion profit, despite the fact that less power was sold even through the winter months. <\/p>\n

Eskom has<\/span> apparently<\/span> provided<\/span> for a<\/span> decline<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> demand<\/span> for<\/span> electricity<\/span> and<\/span> that<\/span> decline<\/span> indeed<\/span> turned out to be more<\/span> than expected<\/span>. However<\/span> Eskom<\/span> planned for an increase<\/span> in the<\/span> demand<\/span> for electricity<\/span> for the next five years. This was given as a<\/span> reason<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> requested<\/span> rate<\/span> increase<\/span> over<\/span> the<\/span> next<\/span> five<\/span> years<\/span>.<\/p>\n

It appears that<\/span> consumers<\/span> actually<\/span> responded very well<\/span> to<\/span> Eskom<\/span>‘s request<\/span> to<\/span> save on<\/span> electricity<\/span>. Moreover<\/span>, the<\/span> increases<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> last<\/span> few<\/span> years<\/span> are enough<\/span> reason<\/span> for<\/span> any consumer<\/span> to<\/span> implement<\/span> further<\/span> savings.<\/span><\/p>\n

It can be assumed<\/span> that<\/span> Eskom\u2019s<\/span> provision for and increase in the demand for electricity for<\/span> the<\/span> next five<\/span> years<\/span> is not realistic<\/span>, which<\/span> means<\/span> that<\/span> no<\/span> further increase in tariffs are<\/span> necessary<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In the light of its profitability<\/span> and possibly<\/span> incorrect<\/span> assumptions and<\/span> calculations<\/span> TAU<\/span> SA calls<\/span> on Eskom<\/span> and<\/span> Nersa<\/span> not to<\/span> implement any tariff increases<\/span> and to place a moratorium on<\/span> any increases<\/span> for the next three years.<\/span> Currently farmers<\/span> suffer severely<\/span> from<\/span> high<\/span> input<\/span> costs<\/span> and<\/span> low<\/span> product<\/span> prices<\/span> and<\/span> relief in the price of electricity will be of great help<\/span> and will contribute<\/span> to<\/span> sustained<\/span> food<\/span> security.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
