TLU SA Calls for the Establishment of an Advisory Committee for Primary Producers

TLU SA met with the Director-General of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Mooketsa Ramasodi, today, taking the opportunity to address critical issues within the agricultural industry. The discussion was productive and constructive.

Bennie van Zyl, CEO of TLU SA, expressed concerns regarding the application and implementation of policies concerning food security in South Africa. Various decisions, proposals, and policies, along with the lack of application and decline of crucial agricultural services such as the Agricultural Research Council, veterinary services, and farmer support during disasters by the Department of Agriculture, have led to significant uncertainty within the industry. This uncertainty has eroded investor confidence and resulted in increased costs for consumers.

The current production inputs for this planting season, such as diesel and fertilisers, are currently affected by various international factors, which will negatively impact sustainable food production in South Africa. “Our agricultural sector cannot afford to implement further flawed policy directions and squander resources unnecessarily,” stated Van Zyl. Furthermore, there is concern about mentoring emerging farmers who fail due to inadequate knowledge.

Success can only be achieved with well-trained agricultural experts who, as part of agricultural technical services, should support these emerging farmers in becoming successful producers.

TLU SA has proposed that the department, in collaboration with TLU SA, SAAI, AGRI SA, AFASA, and NAFU, establish an advisory committee of primary producers dedicated to reviewing policy applications and providing feedback before policies are implemented.

A productive commercial farmer is one of the most valuable assets a country possesses. They should be able to farm effectively and successfully without constant negative influences in their practices. The Department of Agriculture can no longer overlook the importance of a thriving commercial agricultural industry. Input from a knowledgeable committee comprising major agricultural organizations within the country can help ensure that the right decisions are made and that Department stakeholders have a well-informed understanding and perception of the industry.
