Open Letter to the President

Dear Mr. President,

As you are well aware, the situation in South Africa is dire. Crime is out of control, and economic growth is not sufficient to address unemployment. Both infrastructure and the institutions that are supposed to serve the public are largely ineffective. The government must take full responsibility for these issues.

Mr. President, we need to start being honest about the consequences of the ANC’s policy environment. Over the past thirty years, the country’s capabilities have deteriorated to the point where the results of the ANC government’s actions or inactions have brought our nation close to failure. South Africa has tremendous potential, but achieving it will require addressing several key aspects:

  • Policy Review: We need to seriously reconsider the policy environment implemented over the past 30 years. The actions of the ANC government indicate an assumption of inherent prosperity and the availability of funds, which are often misappropriated through tender fraud or other dubious methods to cadres appointed to positions without the necessary expertise.
  • Crime Control: Crime in South Africa has become completely unmanageable. Despite some excellent members in the SAPS, the service delivery by the police is such that the public no longer trusts them. The responsibility for this lies squarely on the government’s shoulders.
  • Investment and Policy Uncertainty: Policies like expropriation without compensation have already caused a 36% decrease in foreign investments in the first three months of 2024 compared to 2023. Fixed investments are crucial for economic growth.
  • Agricultural Impact: The profitability of agriculture is severely affected by the state’s faulty interference, whether through legislation or failure to maintain infrastructure, leading to significant additional costs for producers. The ANC government has not fulfilled the primary responsibilities required of a democratic government.
  • Education Quality: The quality of education in South Africa leaves much to be desired. After 30 years of ANC rule, the results are still not internationally competitive.
  • Infrastructure Management: The mismanagement, or in many cases, the lack of management and maintenance of our infrastructure, causes economic stagnation and prevents economic success.
  • Support for Farmers: The dismissive approach of leaving commercial farmers to their fate in times of disaster is a disgrace to South Africa’s government. Farmers are the government’s greatest asset. Without them, economic activities will come to a halt, leading to chaos and anarchy, which the government is likely ill-equipped to handle. Support the farmers who produce food for the markets.
  • Service Delivery: Service delivery in South Africa has completely collapsed. As long as cadre deployment continues and expertise is not the criterion for appointments, problems will only worsen.
  • Transformation Policy: The transformation policy as applied only benefits a few loyal individuals close to the government. Abandon the policy of BEE and focus instead on the orientation and training of the country’s people so that everyone can learn what prosperity is, where it comes from, and how to achieve it.

On June 7, 2019, TLU SA sent you the attached letter. It took five years for voters to realize there is no future under the ANC’s policies. You are almost entirely rejected due to these policies that steal every young person’s future. Globally, this policy direction has only resulted in sadness and poverty.

What will your contribution be now that a government of national unity has been established? If you persist with the destructive policy direction that has brought the country to this point over 30 years, you will be remembered, as warned five years ago, as the president who placed South Africa on the ash heap of failures.

Test all policy positions based on their impact on economic growth. Stop cadre deployment and eradicate corruption at all levels. Cleanse the SAPS so they can once again be a proud unit serving the people of the country. Respect the right economic principles and apply them—principles that have been proven worldwide to create prosperity, namely the principle of private property rights and a market-oriented economic system. For those who accept the responsibility of what life requires of them, there is an opportunity to create prosperity.

All these aspects start with you as president and the leadership you provide.
