TLU SA today successfully hosted its annual congress at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria under the theme “Local Strength = Global Opportunity.” Members from across the country, as well as representatives from other agricultural organisations and government, came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the current agricultural landscape.
During the congress, Henry Geldenhuys was re-elected unopposed as President of TLU SA. Wannie Scribante was re-elected as Deputy President. In his presidential address, Geldenhuys emphasised that property rights are the cornerstone of stability and food security.
The congress also adopted a series of important resolutions on property rights, safety, local government, labour, economic sustainability, education and culture, and environmental matters with a focus on water management. These resolutions will serve as guidelines for TLU SA’s policy work and engagement in the coming year.
Several guest speakers and partners contributed valuable insights. Dr Wouter Basson was the keynote speaker, while other agricultural organisations, and congress sponsors brought messages. A message on behalf of agriculture minister John Steenhuisen was delivered by deputy director-general Dipepeneneng Serage. Panel discussions highlighted pressing issues such as farm safety, labour, and economic sustainability.
Bennie van Zyl, general manager of TLU SA, highlighted the hard work of members and structures in his annual report: “Our farmers show their resilience daily amid difficult circumstances. Our grassroots structures are the backbone of TLU SA and make it possible for the farmer’s voice to be heard loud and clear. We continue to seek solutions, apply pressure where needed, and utilise opportunities that can serve both the farmer and the country,” said Van Zyl.
He reiterated that TLU SA does not only focus on problem-solving but also on long-term sustainability: “We want farmers to be able to work, make a profit, and plan with certainty. That is why we will never stop protecting the interests of the farmer and keeping the road to progress open.”
The congress concluded with the presentation of awards to members who had given outstanding service. A strong call for unity and cooperation among farmers marked the day, with the message that local strength can indeed extend to global opportunities when farmers, communities, and partners work together.
