Pumpkins on rooftops, on bakkies, on trailers, on shelves, and even in the news. Yet the big question on everyone’s lips remains: will we see the coveted 1-ton pumpkin this year? The growers are keeping quiet, but the anticipation and excitement are high.
Should a pumpkin reach the impressive 1-ton mark, a cash prize of R35 000 is at stake, sponsored by Laeveld Agrochem. In addition, there are prizes for the ten heaviest pumpkins, junior growers under the age of 16, as well as for the most beautiful and even the “ugliest” pumpkin. The popular pumpkin seed-spitting and pumpkin racing competitions add further fun and family entertainment.
The annual Goliat van Gat se Pampoenfees organised by Cullinan Farmers Union will take place on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at the Lavender Kontrei Mark, Onderstepoort, Pretoria, from 09:00 to 15:00.
In the meantime, festivities have already kicked off with a weight-guessing competition at Fruit Stop in 10th Avenue, Gezina, Pretoria. Members of the public are invited to pop in, make a purchase, enter the competition and stand a chance to win a voucher.
Preparations for the big competition day are already in full swing. Festivalgoers can look forward to live entertainment by the well-known singer Pieter Koen, numerous stalls, plenty of food and refreshments, as well as a child-friendly entertainment area. There will be ample seating and space to relax for the whole family.
Admission is R20 per person, while pensioners and children under 12 enjoy free entry.
A pumpkin dish competition will also be presented. Bring your favourite pumpkin dish, enter, and stand a chance to win a cooking lesson at Steyn’s Kookskool in Hatfield, Pretoria.
This festival is made possible through the loyal support of our sponsors and partners, namely: Laeveld Agrochem, Uitkyk Vleismark, Capital Scales, Yara, Rolfes Agri, Obaro, Steyn’s Culinary School and Fruit Stop.
There is still opportunity for exhibitors (please note: no food or beverage stalls, as established suppliers are already present at the market). Enquiries about the day and available stands may be directed to Henri Combrink at culliboer@gmail.com or 082 552 9428.
We warmly invite the public to be part of this unique agricultural festival!
