TLU SA Northern Cape expresses serious concern regarding the planned upgrade and potential expansion of the Vaalputs nuclear waste storage facility, which is located in a sensitive and strategically important agricultural region.
This development has far-reaching implications for organised agriculture, local communities, and food security in Namaqualand and the broader Northern Cape.
Our concerns include:
1. Food security and sustainable production:
The Vaalputs area lies in a region that is becoming increasingly important for sustainable livestock farming and dryland crop production. Any contamination—whether current or potential—of soil, air, or water sources poses a direct threat to the safety and market acceptance of food products from this region.
2. Environmental impact on ecologically sensitive areas:
Namaqualand is a unique ecosystem and a tourist attraction renowned for its high biodiversity. Expanding the facility increases the risk of long-term environmental damage—something that cannot easily be reversed.
3. Lack of transparency and public participation:
We are concerned about the extent to which local stakeholders have been included in decision-making processes. Landowners, agricultural organisations, and communities must be properly consulted, with clear access to risk assessments, planning documents, and alternative options.
4. Negative impact on local development and investment:
The presence of a nuclear waste facility may negatively affect future agricultural development, tourism investment, and land values—undermining job creation and economic growth in the region.
TLU SA Northern Cape calls on the authorities and responsible entities to reconsider the process, to release thorough independent environmental impact studies, and to ensure a meaningful public participation process.
We will not stand by while the long-term sustainability of agriculture and communities is jeopardised. Vaalputs must not become a silent compromise that irreversibly harms the future of Namaqualand.
