Francois Prinsloo, Nets Turvey, and Nicky van der Linde have been named as finalists for the competition, each having the opportunity to vie for the prestigious title of Young Farmer of the Year. In addition to the usual overseas travel prize, they will also receive a double-cab bakkie for use during the next year. The finalists will also receive additional cash prizes.
The panel of judges, consisting of seven members this year, visited the finalists on their farms and unanimously agreed that the dynamics of the younger generation of farmers are promising and truly offer hope for the future.
The panel members evaluate each candidate independently without any discussions taking place during the visits. Various significant aspects of farming are assessed, such as financial management, production management, marketing, risk management, maintenance, labor management, utilization of technology and mechanization, advocacy, future vision, cleanliness, and involvement in organized agriculture and the community.
After visiting the last candidate, each panel member’s chosen winner was reviewed, followed by a discussion. This year’s top three finalists impressed the judges with above-average performance across the various evaluation criteria.
Aspects that left a lasting impression include a positive future vision and the understanding that profitability must be pursued, where record-keeping and personal research stood out.
Bennie van Zyl, CEO of TLU SA, mentioned that among the standout qualities in the finalists were compassion and community service, involvement in organized agriculture, passion for the agricultural sector, and enthusiasm to support TLU SA for its principles and values.
Another standout aspect for the judges was the organization, record-keeping, reporting, and research of the farms.
“Our young farmers are on track towards the future,” says Van Zyl. “It’s unfortunate that there can only be one winner.”
A big word of thanks to our sponsors, Hatfield Motor Group, Santam Agriculture, Introlab, and Manitou, who generously provided substantial prizes. “This also proves the importance of nurturing successful farmers for the future and how it benefits everyone.”
The winner will be announced on September 6 during the Farmers’ Festival at the Congress.
