The protection of property rights lies at the heart of a free, stable and prosperous society. It affects not only landowners, but every South African who wishes to invest, produce, create jobs and build a future for the next generation.
Against the backdrop of ongoing policy developments and legislative changes relating to expropriation without compensation, TLU SA will host a Property Rights Conference on 9 September 2026.
The conference will bring together some of South Africa’s leading experts in law, economics and land policy to examine the issue from a range of perspectives. The aim is to equip delegates with factual information, legal insight and a clearer understanding of the potential implications of the country’s current policy direction.
According to Bennie van Zyl, General Manager of TLU SA, property rights extend far beyond the ownership of land.
“When property rights are weakened, the consequences are felt across every sector of the economy. It affects food security, investor confidence, economic growth and the legal certainty on which a democratic society is built. It is therefore essential that South Africans remain informed about these developments.”
The conference will open with a welcome by Bennie van Zyl, followed by the official opening by Jaco Schoeman, Chairperson of TLU SA’s Property Rights Committee.
The speakers include:
- Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape MEC for Agriculture, who will present on “Expropriation in the Political Environment: The Statutory and Constitutional Way Forward.”
- Professor Andries Raath, Emeritus Professor of Jurisprudence, author and philosopher, who will examine the cost of expropriating South Africa’s cultural assets, language and heritage.
- Dr Theo de Jager, Chairperson of SAAI, who will discuss the economic implications of expropriation without compensation and the potential damage it could cause to South Africa’s economy and international reputation.
Van Zyl emphasises that the conference is not intended solely for the agricultural sector.
“Property rights form the foundation upon which businesses, families and communities build their future. This is a conversation that should matter to every citizen who cares about South Africa’s economic and constitutional future.”
TLU SA invites farmers, business owners, legal practitioners, policymakers, students and all interested members of the public to attend the conference.
Members of the media are also invited to attend and engage with the speakers and TLU SA representatives on one of the most significant policy issues currently facing South Africa.
