The government is failing miserably to protect South Africans from crime, and self-protection has not been a luxury for a long time. Therefore, TLU SA is investigating how taxpayers can benefit from essential security expenses. TLU SA today launched a campaign encouraging people to support this investigation.
“Crime levels have been rising yearly since 2018 and in December 2022 reached the highest level ever,” said Bennie van Zyl, TLU SA general manager. “With 75 murders, 180 rapes, 63 home robberies and 454 home burglaries per day, crime in the country is indeed an epidemic, even a pandemic, if one considers the impact on overseas families. Unlike Covid-19, it is not officially described as such. However, the extent of crime makes us believe that the emergency legislation made during Covid-19 to allow for financial compensation for certain expenses should also apply here.”
With this petition, we seek support so that TLU SA, when the best possible route has been established, can present it to the relevant bodies and departments with overwhelming public support.
“As with so many of the government’s tasks, it fails to fulfil its mandate. As a result, people are left to their own devices to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Van Zyl. “It is only natural and fair that one receives compensation when you take over the government’s work.
“Our members – commercial farmers – especially, incur huge expenses to ensure their communities are safe. Every cent spent on security is a cent that cannot be spent on production, and this impacts the sustainable food provision.”
