The search for South Africa’s top young farmer begins again! TLU SA invites all young farmers to enter the 2025 Young Farmer of the Year competition, where the country’s most dedicated and forward-thinking farmers will compete for incredible prizes – including a double-cab 4×4 bakkie and an international agricultural experience.
This year’s competition follows an outstanding 2024, where pig farmer Wian Süllwald was crowned the winner. With 10 finalists from across South Africa, it was an inspiring showcase of young talent, innovation, and determination in the agricultural sector. We eagerly await to see which talented young farmer will take the crown this year.
What makes this competition special?
The TLU SA Young Farmer competition is not just a title – it is a platform where young farmers’ knowledge, management skills, and passion for agriculture are put to the test. Participants are evaluated on financial and risk management, infrastructure, mechanisation and technology, production practices, and their involvement in the community. Additionally, the winner must be a dynamic ambassador for TLU SA and a voice for South Africa’s young farmers.
“This competition is not about the size of your farm or your family history in farming,” says Bennie van Zyl, General Manager of TLU SA. “It is about your contribution, your innovation, and how you make a difference in the agricultural sector. It’s an opportunity to refine your farming skills, gain new insights, and ultimately take your career to the next level.”
Who can enter?
All young farmers who are members of TLU SA can enter. If you are not yet a member – no problem! Your competition entry automatically gives you the opportunity to become a member and be part of a network of dedicated farmers building South Africa’s agricultural future.
The competition process
TLU SA’s regions play a key role in evaluating entries at a provincial level. Each region assesses the entries in their area and nominates three finalists (sometimes more or fewer) to compete at the national level. However, if there are, for example, five outstanding young farmers who meet the criteria, TLU SA’s head office may decide to visit all five from a single province. It is important to note that not every entry will necessarily be visited at the national level, but every entry will be assessed by the regional branch. This means that some regions may have more finalists than others who are ultimately visited by the national judges.
The judges visit each participant’s farm and evaluate their farming practices according to an objective scoring system. The final decision is made after a thorough discussion process to ensure that the most deserving young farmer is crowned the winner.
While the competition offers fantastic prizes, it is also a valuable opportunity for young farmers to refine their skills and build meaningful networks. Don’t miss this chance to measure yourself against the best of the best.
Closing date: 20 June 2025
