TLU SA’s Young Farmer Competition valuable
South Africa’s young farmers must seize the opportunity to enter the TLU SA Young Farmer of the Year competition with both hands.
This encouragement comes from TLU SA’s 2021 Young Farmer of the Year, Dawid Brits.
“I see this competition as encouragement and motivation for young farmers. There are not many such opportunities. It is quite an inspiring process, and we all need inspiration when it becomes difficult,” said Brits.
Brits farms in the Balfour district with soybeans, maize, and chickens on the farm Modderbult where his grandfather and father also farmed. It is especially with maize that Brits shows his mettle.
For Brits, the whole process was a fun and educational opportunity.
“It was a nice feeling to win and all the calls from people who wanted to talk about agriculture and farming were good for me. I believe that you should live your life with a positive and motivated attitude. With the Young Farmer of the Year competition, young farmers have something extra to work for and the opportunity to inspire a whole new generation.”
Why is it important to pay attention to young farmers? “It is simple: It is with young farmers that South Africa’s agricultural future lies. It simply must not be lost.”
According to Brits, there is no doubt in his mind that being a farmer is not just a profession, but rather a vocation.
“Living on the farm every day as part of my family and a community is what makes being a farmer special, I believe. Farming is a way of life. I was born for this. This is the only thing I have ever wanted to be.”
