Will we see a record-breaking giant pumpkin at the 20th Goliat van Gat Pumpkin Festival? The current record of 890kg is held by Wykus Lamprecht. This popular Pumpkin Festival will take place on 16 March 2024 from 13:00 to 18:30 at the Pretoria Boeremark Grounds in Silverton.
“Our hope is to get a one-ton pumpkin this year, and that’s why we’ve established a substantial additional prize of R25,000 (sponsored by Laeveld Agrochem) to incentivise growers,” said Henri Combrink, chairman of TLU SA’s Cullinan Farmers’ Union.
Each sponsor involved in the Pumpkin Festival makes a significant contribution to making the competition a success. There will be a beer garden, stalls with food and drinks, as well as a variety of other products for everyone to enjoy. Attendees can look forward to entertainment by ABREU and Adam Tas.
“There is significant interest in the Pumpkin Festival, and we expect many new entries,” said Combrink. “There will be competitions such as the largest pumpkin, the most beautiful pumpkin, the ugliest pumpkin, a seed-spitting competition, and a variety of others to entertain attendees. The heaviest pumpkin will be displayed at Uitkyk Vleismark in Silverton for a few days after the competition for viewing.”
All the pumpkins entered will go to a welfare organisation for distribution among less fortunate people in and around Pretoria.
Everyone is welcome. Tickets are R50 per person, and entry for children under 12 years old is free. Tickets are available on the Goliat van Gat Pampoenfees Facebook page.
