The TLU Drought Fund was established in 1962 following a five-year-long drought and repeated outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Transvaal. The aim of the TLU SA Trauma Fund is as follows:
- To provide counselling services to victims and relatives of violent crimes on farms and agricultural holdings;
- To offer emergency relief in critical and exceptional cases where the breadwinner has died or been hospitalised and there is no other reasonable source of income or assistance to meet immediate needs such as food, accommodation, and stabilising medical services;
- To provide agricultural emergency relief to needy farmers;
- Socio-economic upliftment projects;
- Community development for poor and needy individuals in agriculture, including:
- Community projects for capacity building, upliftment, and skills development;
- Training projects and support for community projects as mentioned above;
- Providing training and support for emerging micro-businesses in agriculture;
- Agricultural upliftment projects;
- Training assistance for counsellors and training of emerging farmers and agriculture-related activities;
- Involvement in the conservation and rehabilitation of natural resources;
- Providing assistance to commercial farmers in drought-stricken areas;
- Aid to farmers affected by disasters.
