EU Parliamentarians from 19 countries sign statement against farm murders in SA
Forty eight members of the European Parliament from 19 member states have condemned the murders of white farmers in South Africa.
An initiative by Messrs. Philip Claeys (Vlaams Belang, Flanders), Andreas Mölzer (FPÖ, Austria) and Fiorello Provera (Lega Nord, Italy) lead to a statement of protest in the European Parliament against the wave of farm murders in South Africa in which more than thousand farmers have been murdered. The statement raised special concern about the meticulous way in which farm attacks are planned and executed, and urged the South African government to implement measures to ensure the safety of its farmers.
The statement was signed by 48 parliamentarians from 19 European Union member states and is representative of 7 different political groups, including socialists, liberals, Christian Democrats, independents, nationalists and even a member of the communists. European Parliament, Philip Claeys, said in his response to his initiative that the protest against South African farm murders crossed country and party boundaries. Only the Green Movement did not sign the motion, and according to mr. Claeys, thus approved the killing of farmers in South Africa.
This motion follows barely a month after TAU‘SAs Assistant General Manager: Communications, mr. Henk van de Graaf, was the guest at a meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels, during which he explained the problem and extent of farm murders in South Africa. He suggested that personal sanctions against South African government officials should be imposed if they do not address farm murders sufficiently.
“It is clear that the international community is taking notice of farm murders and that the South African government cannot hide is any longer under the carpet,” said TAU SA‘s General Manager, Mr. Bennie van Zyl. “We are therefore very grateful to the initiators of this action.”
