Saai and TLU SA are grateful that Agri SA has also joined the Moladora case and will now make a financial contribution towards the costs of the case. The case has thus far been driven by Agri-NW, Mpumalanga Agriculture, TLU SA, and Saai because it can have damning consequences for property rights and potential implications for every farmer.
The case revolves around a controversial ruling favouring land occupiers who kept livestock on a farm without permission. This ruling could set a precedent with severe implications for private property rights.
“Given the extensive costs associated with the appeal case, the original contributors have decided to pool resources, expertise, and capacity to have the greatest possible impact on the outcome of the case,” says Bennie van Zyl, general manager of TLU SA. “TLU SA has already made a financial contribution and agreed to provide its legal team’s inputs to Saai, which enters as a friend of the court.”
“Greater collaboration to ensure that the right economic principles are implemented in the interest of agriculture is of vital importance, and if similar contributions can be made in the areas of farm security, rural crime prevention, action against fraud and state capture in land reform and service delivery, it will usher in a new era in promoting agricultural interests,” says Theo de Jager, Chairman of Saai.
TLU SA and Saai hope that other agricultural organisations and stakeholders will also realise the importance of strengthening the organisations involved from the outset to benefit agriculture.
